The Algarve coastline stretches for 130km from Lagos in the west the Castro Marim in the East and is linked by a very fast highway that crosses into Spain towards Huelva. During your golf holiday in Portugal you can travel from East to West in little over one hour. Most golfers taking golf breaks here head for the central Algarve
So what goes on in the rest of the Algarve that will attract you to a golf holiday there? Until recently (with the exception of Golf Penina) the answer is, not a lot. Thus the famous central Algarve golf courses enjoyed almost unrivalled demand.
But this is no longer the case. Lagos, in the western Algarve is under 80km from Faro Aiport; a forty minute drive on the highway. It grew to infamy as the port from which the slave trade. Thankfully, all that remains of this is a thriving marina, narrow streets that are home to some great bars and a wide selection of restaurants.
In addition, the Hotel Mirachora Praia in Carvoeiro is an ideal base for a golfing holiday or a short golf break.
What is more in the last few years, world class courses have opened nearby at Boavista and Morgado. These two gems compliment the famous Penina course near Portimao, the excellent Pinta and Gramacho golf at Carveiro and the stunning Palmares course near Lagos itself. So all of a sudden you now have a number of outstanding golf venues that are relatively uncluttered, very testing but very fair and which are quite simply a joy to play.
